Roberts.", title within black rule, presentation inscription on title "To my dear Wife, with Her Husband the Author's love, Xmas 1877. St. P. C." and after 'In Memoriam' the author has written "of Major General Charles Richard 21st. Baron & Sixth Earl Delawarr. K C B", original cloth, gilt, a nice copy. "In 1845 and 1846, Lord West served as aide-de-camp and acting military secretary to Sir Hugh Gough during the First Anglo-Sikh war, and was several times mentioned in dispatches. . [he] was sent to the Crimea in 1854, was present at the battle of Inkermann in command of the 21st fusiliers, and initiated the attack on the battery on Shelf Hill which is believed to have led to General Dannenberg's retreat . in 1855 he received the Crimean medal with four clasps, and on 27 July was made CB . [he later became involved in a homosexual scandal and] On the morning of 22 April 1873 he left The Bull inn, Cambridge, and drowned himself in the River Granta; the coroner's jury's verdict was 'temporary insanity'." - ODNB.
