Two volumes in royal quarto (31.5 x 26cm) published in four parts 1821-5 (though the two titles dated 1821 & 1823) with the views all on india paper. Published at 12 guineas, the ordinary copies being half that. 'The most valuable history of Bristol that has yet been produced.'- Hyett & Bazeley. 'An excellent specimen of the better class of local histories of its day.' - Gross. Vol. I, pp.xx,21-535,[1],7; Vol. II, pp.601,[5],7. With an engraved title to the first volume, two frontispieces (one of which additional & not called for in the list of plates) & 34 plates as called for, the portrait of Capt. Goodere being a large woodcut on the letterpress, as is correct, subscribers' lists at the rear of both volumes (the second set being corrected). With the addition of the first 36 etchings from Charles Bird's 'Picturesque Old Bristol', 1885, the series when fully published containing 52 plates, though the final of the six wrappers bound in here indicate the series was (at that moment) completed with 36 plates. A most handsome copy bound in full later 19th C morocco by Rogers of Bristol, the boards bevelled, gilt, teg, lightly rubbed. Presentation plate on the front endpaper indicating bequest of Charles Julius Ryland to Colston Girls' School, Bristol, 1909, but no other marks or indication of instutional ownership. An excellent set, the frontis & title to Vol. I foxed, but otherwise clean, the pages untrimmed. VG. Heavy item may require additional postage for foreign order.
