This is a nice hardcover copy from 1926 of "The Mauve Decade : American Life at the end of the Nineteenth Century" by Thomas Beer. The book was issued by Alfred A. Knopf in New York; this is the Fourth Printing. On the title page is a quote: " . Mr. Whistler said, 'Mauve? Mauve is just pink trying to be purple . " The 1890s were termed the "Mauve Decade" for a variety of reasons, prime among them was that the newly invented analine dye enabled the widespread use of the color in fashion and home furnishings. It was also called the "gay Nineties", but why a color should be connected with gaiety is a puzzle. Mark Twain called the 90s "The Gilded Age" , which conjures gold which conjures Robber Barons which were all too commonly conjured during that era. This is a fascinating read, at once genial and inviting, while, at the same time, offering a somewhat satiric commentary on American social life. This copy has a handsome bookplate with the printed name of "Clair Galbraith Irish". The artist of the plate was obviously influenced by Rockwell Kent in its design. The book is now OP -- out of print. ***************************************** TITLE : The Mauve Decade - American Life at the end of the Nineteenth Century / AUTHOR : Thomas Beer (1889 - 1940) / IMPRINT : Alfred A.
