His own world, where he grew up, was dominated by the mighty Mississippi River . and the life of the 19th century as reflected by the traffic on that river . the settings for many of his books, and characters, including the famous Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn . Learning the River and The Continued Perplexities of Cub Piloting . Award winning actor Ed Begley . not to be confused with his son, actor Ed Begley Jr. . was born in 1901 and died in 1970 . He was a radio actor while still a teenager, then moved on to Broadway, and eventually film . His radio work included playing on the Charlie Chan dramas, among many other roles . including a starring role as the Lieutenant on n the 1950s radio drama Richard Diamond, Private Detective . After the war, in the late 1940s, he made his way out to Hollywood, and became a film actor with many notable supporting roles . Begley has been in many many films, including the famed ' 12 Angry Men' . and he won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for Sweet Bird of Youth , in 1962 . then went on to play in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with the indomitable Debbie Reynolds, in 1964 . and in Hang 'Em High, in 1968 . among many others . The golden age of Television saw him playing on Bonanza and other TV shows of the time . He has a wonderful ' radio voice ' and does justice to the great Mark Twain on this delightful recording .
