A collection of lively philosophical and literary writings, including essays and addresses, written by James Hoskins during his student days at the University of North Carolina (1838-39), and his subsequent residences in Columbus Mississippi (1839-43), and at Eutaw and Marion, Alabama (1843-45). A native of North Carolina, Hoskins (1816-75) was ordained by the eminent Tennessee Bishop James Hervey Otey in 1847. He first attended Wake Forest University, where he served as President of the Philomathesian Society and Deacon of the Wake Forest Baptist Church, and spent his final year of college in Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina. He moved to Mississippi to teach and practice law, traveled for six months in Texas in 1841, and went to Marion, Alabama in 1844 to serve as editor of the *Alabama Baptist*. His entries are notably well-written, ranging from philosophical subjects and reflections on education, including a personal "love letter" and autobiography, and public addresses on various topics. Of his tenure as Editor of the *Alabama Baptist* he writes: "The Abolitionists find me a bold and indomitable opponent and the South call me a true friend to their interests. The Yankees here are aroused and try to put me down [I am] too independent and bold for them. Held a controversy on The Trinity with Prof. Hartwell and came off victorious. Published my MS on Texas well received … The proprietors of the *Baptist*, Yankees, all wish to be Editor, which I will not allow, and so we conclude to separate and I sell out for $100 over and above all proceeds of the Editorial Department. Have determined to enter the Ministry of the Gospel of Christ " After his ordination Hoskins would eventually move to Maryland, serving as headmaster of a private school and Rector of two Parish Churches. A compelling "Original Album of James W. Hoskins" preserving a wide range of his writings from college at Chapel Hill, and his early career in Mississippi and Alabama.
