Occasional traces of foxing. including verso of map, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by folding map hand coloured in outline and by 18 engravings, some whole page, including frontispiece. A topographical and historical account of the island of Mauritius, based on earlier works supplemented by the author's own observations. Francis Patrick Flemyng (1823-95) was an Irish born army officer, who was later educated at Cambridge and following ordination as a priest in 1852, served as an army chaplain in South Africa and later in Mauritius. Two appendices list the Dutch, French and British governors of the island and plants and trees cultivated there. A scarce title handsomely rebound.
