VOLUME I: First edition, first printing (not stated per publisher's standard practice but determined by matching 1973 dates on copyright, title, and terminal pages). [4], i-xii, 1-472 pages. Paperback: H 27.75cm x L 21.5cm. Paper covers rubbed; some creasing and curling at both covers' bottom fore-edge corners as well as occurring to some early and late leaves too. Some soiling to bottom edge. Past owner's ink signature at top of front free endpaper recto; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy. Prepared by architectural historian Jeffrey R. Carson, historian Lynda L. Smith, and architect James Longstreet Sibley Jennings, Jr. With Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgements, b/w map of Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. on pages x-xi, b/w illustrations throughout (including photographs, plans, elevation and section drawings), Bibliography, and Illustrated Architectural Glossary. Reviews twenty-one structures - many in the Beaux Arts style - at 1700, 1746, 1785, 1801, 2020, 2118, 2121, 2200, 2201, 2230, 2234, 2301, 2306, 2311, 2315, 2349, 2370, 2516 Massachusetts Avenue, 15 Dupont Circle, 1606 23rd Street, and 2253 R Street. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts issued an unrevised second printing of Volume I in 1977. VOLUME II: First edition, first printing (not stated per publisher's usual practice but with matching dates upon title page and on page 272). xxiv, 272 pages. Paperback: H 27.5cm x L 21cm. Paper covers rubbed with scuffing along edges, impression from removed price sticker at front cover's top right. Interior pages are clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy. Issued by The Commission of Fine Arts and prepared by architect James Longstreet Sibley Jennings, Jr., historian Sue A. Kohler, and architectural historian Jeffrey R. Carson. With Foreword by J.L. Sibley Jennings, Jr., Postscript to Volume I, Acknowledgements, two page map of Massachusetts Avenue, Sources and Abbreviations, b/w photographs, plans, elevation drawings, and concluding Glossary of Architectural Terms Pictorial with 28 b/w plates. An Introduction provides a brief history of Washington and a discussion on the development of Beaux Arts design in the United States. Jennings et al review nineteen separate and three ensemble structures most of which were designed in the Beaux Arts tradition and several of which are no longer extant: 1013-15 L Street, 1205 Vermont Avenue, 1500 Rhode Island Avenue, 1328 Connecticut Avenue, 1500 and 1511 New Hampshire Avenue, 1520 20th Street, as well as 1101, 1107, 1219, 1400-02, 1601, 1732, 1826, 1913, 2000, 2025, 2122, 2305, 2929, 3000, and 3100 Massachusetts Avenue. The summaries on the individual structures feature architectural commentary and brief biographies of known residents as well as the attributed architect; among the latter are Alfred Bult Mullett, Glenn Brown, John Russell Pope, Jules Henri de Sibour, Nathan Corwith Wyeth [N.C.
