[161 x 105 x 20 mm]. xii, 270 pp. Contemporary binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe (signed in gilt on the rear turn-in) of red goatskin, the covers tooled in gilt with a wide border of six solid fillets and two dotted fillets, with leaves, hearts and dots in the corners, and with the title lettered towards the head of the upper cover. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third and dated at the foot, the turn-ins tooled with gilt fillets, grey endleaves, top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. First Thus. Finely bound by Bumpus in full morocco ornately stamped in gilt to spine and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Inner dentelles gilt. Marbled endpapers. Measuring 150 x 95mm. Slight sunning to spine and bumps to corners, else a tight, bright binding. Preliminary and terminal leaves foxed, with remainder of textblock fresh and unmarked. A pleasing copy. Selected and annotated by Palgrave, the present selection was dedicated by the editor to Emily Lady Tennyson; and the lyrics he chooses are clearly governed by a desire to emphasize feminine beauty and goodness, as well as marital and filial love. To the Queen, A Dream of Fair Women, The May Queen, The Grandmother, and The Miller's Daughter are only a few examples of the lovely lyrics drawn together here.
