Three volumes. The first collected edition the work originally appearing in 86 weekly folio numbers, 1792-3. Duodecimo (18 x 10.5cm). 'In the general introduction to the collected edition, Roberts gives an interesting if pessimistic picture of the state of the country, plunged as it was in the wars of that restless period. It will be perceived that there is a striving towards a certain mild humour, but the prominent feature of the essays is their ethical quality. When Roberts points out the moral with the aid of irony and satire, he is most successful. In his sheet "Omitted in B------'s Life of Johnson" the mannerisms of Johnson and Boswell are well represented and the paper is an excellent example of Roberts' style as an essayist'- Marr.
