[from introduction pg 4] Few people in the twentieth century embodied the late Ming concept of the well-rounded literati gentleman as well as Wang Fangyu (1913 - 1997), an artist, a scholar, and a connoisseur. This exhibition explores what it means to carry on that tradition. As an artist, Wang created a novel pictorial style of calligraphy. As a scholar, he studied and developed ways to teach arcane types of script. As a connoisseur, he formed one of the great collections of the work of the enigmatic seventeenth century painter Bada Shanren (1625 - 1705). One of the world's leading authorities on the modern artists Qi Baishi (1863 - 1957) and Zhang Daqian (1899 - 1983) as well as on Bada Shanren, Wang formed an unusually focused collection that relates the work of these three artists in a way that only a scholar and fellow artist could. Born in Beijing, China, in 1913, Wang Fangyu emigrated the United States in 1949, where he taught and wrote text books for more than thirty years at Yale University and Seton Hall University. Since 1974, his calligraphy has been widely exhibited and published. In 1990, he co-curated with Richard M. Barnhart the Yale exhibition Master of the Lotus Garden: The Life and Art of Bada Shanren, a project that represented the summation of his life's work in the study of that artist. The works in this exhibition reflect the idiosyncrasies of Wang Fangyu's collection as it was found at the time of his unexpected death in November 1997. N° de ref. del artículo 20210720014
