Engraved portrait frontispiece and vignette half-title; letterpress title page to the first volume, 32 further engraved plates + folding engraved map - in accordance with directions to the binders (vol. I: 11 plates; vol. II: 10 plates + folding plan; vol. III: 11 plates). The portrait of St. Vincent, called for in volume II, is present in volume III, and therefore, as often, has been substituted by a plate of Admiral Lord Keith at page 325 rather than 89. Seven Divisions in the original cloth bindings with gilt crest and titles to each front board, each spine repaired with the original laid down, in overall good condition. Bindings good and strong with a wear and some rubbing to edges, corners bumped and worn. Contents good and tight, the odd old finger and ink mark, but mostly clean, a little toning/browning to all and pages. A good set. Bibliographical note: this is the second complete edition - the first edition appeared in 1809 in 2 substantial folio volumes, followed by a much-abridged single octavo edition in 1810; this second complete edition, was originally issued in 7 parts in 1839/1840 [as here], with a view to be bound in 3 volumes. This edition includes three appendices published for the first time; the recollections of Tom Allen; the memoirs of Thomas Masterman Hardy; and Lord Collingwood. Approximately 9 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition worn with marks, original spine laid onto new cloth. Joints good condition worn but solid. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition original full cloth boards with gilt crest and titles to each front boards, blind stamped tooling to the front and rear board edges, marked and scratches, some bubbling to the front board of Division I. Page edges good condition tanned, untrimmed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition secure. Paste downs good condition clean, new paste downs with the book plate of R C Fiske to the front paste down of each volume. End papers good condition new. Title good condition tanned, foxed and finger marks to the pictorial titles, tanned and foxed to the letterpress titles. Pages good condition minor foxing and tanned throughout.
