The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL,D. by Sir John Hawkins, Knt. . Edited, Abridged and with an Introduction by Bertram H. Davis, Macmillan & Co., NY 1961. In 1797, Sir John Hawkins wrote this first full biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson, the renowned 18th-century poet, playwright, essayist, and social commentator. Hawkins was a friend of Johnson's but apparently was disliked and somewhat excluded from Johnson s elite social circle. In 1791, the book was followed by the more famous biography by Hawkins literary competitor, and another friend of Johnson's, James Boswell. From A Note on the text in this Macmillan edition: The first edition of Hawkins Life of Johnson was published in March 1797, and the second, containing Hawkins additions and corrections was published three months later. This book has not been re-published since that time. This present text is based on the second edition, with occasional modifications to take advantage of more correct readings in the First Edition. Cloth bound hardcover book with dust-jacket. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. 341 pages excluding Introduction. Condition: Cloth covers are without wear, binding is tight. Original owner's name and a small number notation are neatly penned on the first free endpaper. Interior is clean, bright and unmarked. Dust-jacket has some areas of edge wear and some mild rubbing. Front flap corners are clipped, though original price is present. In all a very well-preserved copy. N° de ref. del artículo 1845
