Descripción

Quarter oatmeal cloth portfolio (13.75 x 11 in.) with patterned paper sides. Complete with all 43 printing specimens plus the booklet (with the printed slip listing two late additions laid in) providing details on the contents. In connection with the 500th anniversary of the printing of the Gutenberg 42-line Bible, leading figures in book and type design were invited to provide a sample design. Thirty-seven designers (a few contributed more than one specimen) from 15 countries are represented, including Gotthard de Beauclair, Hans Schmoller, Hermann Zapf, Jan van Krimpen, Jan Tschichold, Henri Friedlaender, Max Caflisch, Joseph Blumenthal, Bruce Rogers, and Ward Ritchie. The specimens range in size from 12mo to folio, from single leaf to multiple pages. One of 1500 copies (of which 500 were for sale). Very good copy; some of the specimens have edge creases (mostly short and light), portfolio is fine. Housed in the original plain cardboard box, which is rubbed and worn.
