Size: 11 x 14" (opens to: 23 1/2" across). Front cover features two finely gilt borders: outer single border of small leaf-form tools & a larger, 3/4" blocked & lined border of renaissance-style gilt tooling featuring curved, arabesques formed of floral or foliated tools, or geometric forms; interior is lined with a watered, dark brown fabric, with two vertical flaps in the left-hand of the opened front cover, for storing stationary, envelopes, etc. A dark brown, knotted fabric cord is bound through inner spine area & holds in place three folded sheets of thick, (approx.) 22 x 13 1/2" tan paper, for storing flat letters. Outer covers show a few, nearly invisible indentations (from have been used as a writing surface), some age-related fading to edges of inner fabric. Else, little sign of heavy use or ageing. Fifty years ago these portfolios were still found on the writing desks of anyone who still hand wrote personal letters. They are now quite uncommon. This one is by one of the best American makers.
