Half leather binding, gilt title, raised gilt bands, gilt decoration to the compartments, marbled page edges, paste downs and end papers, tissue guarded portrait frontispiece together with further plates throughout the book. The complete poetical works by the popular English poet, Mrs Hemans. Illustrated, with eight full page plates. With a biographical introduction by the editor. Published as a part of the 'Lansdowne Poets' collection from Frederick Warne and Co. Felicia Hemans was a popular English poet. She began writing verse in her childhood, as early as eight. At the age of fifteen her first quarto of poetry was published and she had a subsequent eighteen books published. Hemans' poetry was considered to be morally exemplary and was often assigned to schoolchildren. xxiv, 708pp plus 2pp list of other books. Approximately 7 ¼ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt title on a black label, 5 raised gilt bands, gilt decoration to the compartments. Joints good condition gently rubbed. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition half leather/marbled boards, the fore edges of both boards are very faded, some wear to the leather corners. Page edges good condition top edge slightly darkened, for edge very faded, all marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition marbled. End papers good condition marbled, subsequent end papers tanned and foxed. Title good condition small b/w illustration, lightly tanned, red linear border.
