Hand-written and signed letter from Stanislas Leszczynski, Duke of Lorraine and former King of Poland, to the Chanoinesses de Saint Goery d'Epinal, dated 15 January, 1757 and inserted at end of text. In it, Stanislas refers to the recent attempt to assassinate his son-in-law, Louis XV, on January 5, 1757. Engraved frontispiece and title page; viii, 608 p. Five finely executed copper-plate engravings by Antoine Humblot. Beautifully drawn head and tail pieces; decorated initials, seemingly all different, throughout. Gentle age-yellowing to outer margins of text. Small water stain to upper margin and .5 cm of second engraving. Marbled boards. Contemporary red morocco, with the arms of Louis XV gilt-tooled to front and back covers within fleur de lys border. Gilt-tooled cover edges. All edges gilt.
