Size of the binding: 4 inches x 6 3/8 in., Eisen frontispiece, title-page in red and black (the top margin is repaired with early paper and the titling letters inked in: L'ELOGE DE), with a smaller engraved design, Latin quotation from Erasmus on the reverse; explanation of the engravings, publisher's preface; Erasmus' preface to Thomas More. xxiv, pp. [1]-222; with the Eisen frontispiece, and 13 other engravings, designed mainly by Eisen (one signed: Beauvais), engraved by Lafosse, le Mire, P. F. Tardieu & others; and 3 smaller engravings. Old, mottled leather, with remains of title label on the spine, worn gilt designs, marbled endpapers, blue marbled edges. Splitting to the outer front hinge, general wear to spine, hinges, cover corners & edges. A number of words in the text show early ink underlining, check in the margins, some age-related tanning to pages and engravings, some brown spots, damp spots to a few upper margins. French text.
