Knife Grinder (San) Nineteenth Century Indian or Persian Painting on paper. [Framed Indian (?) watercolor].

Descripción

A recently (1970's-80's) framed & matted 19th century Indian (?) watercolor painting, possibly removed from a larger album of similar genre scenes of life, costumes, etc. of India. On a 9 1/2 x 7 3/8" sheet of glazed surface, laid paper; the 5 1/2 x 2 1/2" images of two knife grinders with their grinding wheel, boxes, razor, scissors, etc. is bordered in a series of blue, red, blue, thicker gold line & another thin red line. The two men wear red headresses, white tunics, baggy dark blue pants & pink or yellow sashes, both are barefoot; the squatting figure at the wheel that he is controlling with his foot, is holding a knife blade to the sharpening wheel, while his seated assistant pulls a leather thong around an axle to keep the wheel turning. A very finely detailed painting, especially the facial features & costumes. In the lower left area well below the figures, this has been added in a very small, fine handwriting in brown ink, in English: "Perspective some what defective Intended for a wheel and axle of which the two uprights are the supports, & the stone the wheel, and the horizontal bar the axle turned by a leather thong". Under the border in the margin is written: San [+] Knife grinder; words in an Indian/Persian language [?] (Hindustani ?) & English identifying the occupation of the figures pictured. In a 14 x 11" dark finished, glass fronted frame, with hanging wire, backing sheets in back, lacking backing paper. Lower right area shows some tanning; outer edges of painting margins (covered by matting) show age browning; painting held to matting by two small strips of masking tape on left & right sides, this can be removed by a paper conservator; section of age-related tanning to lower 2" area of lower right corner of painting.
