Descripción

A few passages from the back cover notes on this book will convey its content, intent and scope. The opening line says "This new historical study reveals the hidden patronage and interlocking political, business and family interests behind the construction of Wellington;'s iconic cable car." Late in 1898 legislation authorised this project, however, Bourke's "study" reaches further to reveal "secret links between Seddon's (King Dick) Liberal government and a small coterie of West Coast business friends." This was made up of Irishmen who had moved to Wellington where they became a powerful business clique. (Seddon held the parliamentary seat of Westland, on (the West Coast, becoming Premier in 1893.) The book also covers a number of political/business events and leadership rivalry, in NZ at that time, including how the Kelly Gang , as the Irish combine became known, ".used their considerable financial resources to keep their friend Richard Seddon in power, and how he in turn rewarded their loyalty with numerous favours." These, the author concludes included the cable car construction and associated city development. The book is sub-titled "Richard Seddon and Political Patronage" and it broke new ground in looking back at historic "mulifarious operations in Wellington." First edition of 2008 by Hit or Miss Publishing, 256 pages including four appendices, one a chart of the interlocking shareholdings of the major personalities, abbreviations, footnotes, bibliography and index, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, maps/plans, document reproductions, contemporary cartoons.
