Seven-year-old Jeremy's summer is filled with friends and adventure on his South Carolina farm. Boys and girls, black and white are all friends as they climb trees, chase farm animals, and discover the wonders of the low country shoreline. With a great deal of worry and effort, Jeremy finally learns to swim and row so he can visit the abandoned island just offshore. Peppered throughout with appealing black & white drawings by the author, who lived in South Carolina for much of her adult life. Although the black & white children in this story play together and treat each other as equals, this book does portray some racial stereotypes of its age: black characters are described as negro, there are occasional phrases such as "his white teeth showed", and an African American dialect is used that might offend some readers.
