About the Author: WILLIAM R. SEARS was one of the greatest aerodynamicists of the twentieth century, who made significant and enduring contributions to education, aerodynamics, and aircraft design. He received his bachelor s degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Minnesota before studying under Theodore von Kármán at the California Institute of Technology. During World War II he served as Northrop s Chief of Aerodynamics and Flight Testing, where he led design of the P-61 Black Widow and YB-35 Flying Wing. Sears founded and directed the Graduate School of Aeronautical Engineering at Cornell University. In 1974 he joined the faculty of the University of Arizona Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. After his passing in 2002 the University of Arizona, with generous support from the Sears family, established the William R. Sears Memorial Lecture Series. The many professional honors bestowed upon Sears include the prestigious Prandtl Ring, the von Kármán Medal, and the Guggenheim Medal.
DEMETRI P. TELIONIS is Frank J. Maher Professor Emeritus in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was a student of William R.
