Pp. [vi], 3-96, 112, [3]; 12mo, contemporary calf with gilt double-filet border, four raised bands, gilt compartments. Printed front to back. Upon publication of the initial volume of Brian Walton's monumental six-volume folio Biblia Sacra Polyglotta, known as the London Polyglot Bible, Walton notified subscribers that for those who may be "ignorant of the tongues, there will be published within a few days a small Manual, containing an Introduction to the reading of them, together with Alphabets of them all, as also of the Coptic and Armenian; and Directions what Grammars and Lexicons to procure, and what method is to be used for attaining the further knowledge of them" (Memoirs of the Life and Writings of the Right Rev. Brian Walton, D.D., vol. I, pp. 68-69). The present copy, the second edition of that "Manual," was published the following year, "with improvements" (ibid., p. 70). Plans for the London Polyglot Bible had raised concerns that its variant texts could cause belief in the authority of the Bible to be undermined, and it is this concern that the "Introductio" was intended to address by providing a means to understanding the variety of ancient and oriental languages, how to read them, and how differing surviving texts could be used. With alphabet specimens; three of the typefaces, Ethiopic, Coptic and Armenian were actually printed in woodcut. This is the Macclesfield copy, with their armorial blind stamped on the first and final two printed leaves and the Macclesfield North Library bookplate on the rear pastedown. Contents very good, with mild toning at the edges; covers and backstrip with some wear (mostly at the edges), with a one-inch split at the front upper hinge (but still holding firmly).
