Título: ISLANDS NEAR THE SUN
Editorial: London: H. F. & G. Witherby 1927
Año de publicación: 1927
FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. 15-232 plus index. Frontispiece of the Coast Belt of Tahiti and 8 further b/w photographic illustrations. Original orange cloth with pictorial of palm trees in an island scene continued on the spine. Some wear but sound. Interior is clean. Appears to be missing one of two flyleaves. This is one of Evelyn Cheesman's early books and the first in which she moves away from her entomological work to describe her journeys in what were in 1952, very remote areas, and the people she meets on the way. She had accompanied the St. George Expedition to the South Seas in 1924 and left it at its farthest point, Tahiti. She spent about five months on Tahiti, Raiatea and Bora Bora collecting specimens but more importantly for us describing her stay on the islands and the conditions in which she found them. She is surprised that not one of the many books she read about the South Sea Islands ever gave a true impression of their peculiar charm or the loveliness of their scenery. This is not surprising considering the type of travel and exploration writing that had been done up to then. Luckily, Evelyn Cheesman starts to make up for this in this charming book. Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
