Size of the binding: 5 1/4 inches x 8 3/8 in. x 2 3/4 in. (thick); title-page with Armorial device. Unnumbered pages. A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, 3A-3Z8, 4A8. Last text page of the New Testament is on 4A5a, Appendix continues to 4A8b; pagination continues from the O.T. through the N. T. titlepage to the N. T. text: 3H-3H4; two parts, without the Apocrypha; similar to # 1465 in Herbert, Historical Catalogue of English Bibles (1968), p. 324. Includes Dedication page to James I, with list of Books of the Bible on the reverse; Table of Kindred, and Time; second 1803 title-page for The New Testament; Tables of Offices of men, Weights and measures, Appendix of Surface measures. Geo. W. Alexander No. 7 Spruce Street near Nassau (New York City) Job Bookbinding ad bound in at the end. Bound in full, black morocco leather, with four bands across the spine, gilt-lettered title, and decorations on the spine, gilt borders around the covers, cover edges, small inner dentelles, brown endpapers, headbands. The spine, spine ends, outer hinges, cover corners, edges show light rubbing; a few page corners were formerly turned down, crease to back endpaper; a few small pencil notes present; some of the marginal annotations have been trimmed with the loss of a few letters to some pages, some tanning, tan spotting to flyleaves, text pages. This mid-19th century binding does not have the Geo. W. Alexander binder's label, but does have their specially printed announcement/advertising sheet bound in at the end of the Bible. With the bookplate of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, William G. Mather (1857-1951), on the front paste-down endpaper. Text of the Alexander sheet: Job Bookbinding. The subscriber having determined to turn his especial attention to this branch of his business, would solicit the patronage of his friends and the public. The character of the workmen employed in his establishment all of whom have been selected for their superior knowledge of this branch of the business, the quality of the stock used, which is the best offered in the New York Market, gives assurance that the work will be done with neatness and durability.
