The part played by the Fiji military forces during WWII is well covered in this history published in 1948. Brigadier J G C Wales, Commanadant Fiji Forces in 1942- 43 summed up the establishment of the force in his foreward to the history: "In the first days of the war, with no military history or tradition behind them, these carefree, happy, peace-loving people volunteered in large numbers. With equipment then at the low ebb of sticks for rifles and stones for granades they did all that was asked of them, enduring long hours of strenuous training, wearing unaccustomed clothes and boots and learning to eat strange and unaccustomed army food. .soon a complete brigade of Fijian soldiers, with Fijian, English, Australian and New Zealand officers and NCOS looked for a wider sphere of action. Natural born scouts, unsurpassed with the bayonet, their drill excellent and their marksmanship the best I have ever seen, they bacame the Fiji Military Forces'. From 1942 to the end of the war they played their part in the forwatrd areas of the Pacific winning many honours, including the Victoria Cross." This history of the Force initially deals with its general establishment and deployments from 1941-1945, followed by a roll of honour, honours and awards, demobilistaion and a nominal roll. Then, brief histories of each of the 40+ individual units that constituted the force occupy the final section of the book.
