8vo (23.5 cm), front., 304 pp, 18 plates. Publisher's cloth (binding slightly rubbed). The second edition of this book, revised with the assistance of Arthur Hughes, builds upon the pioneering work first published in 1934. It remains the earliest endeavor to document the Western history of embryology, tracing the evolution of ideas from prehistoric concepts of fetal growth through Graeco-Roman antiquity to the close of the eighteenth century. The text is enriched with plates and diagrams illustrating the development of scientific understanding over time. These visuals progress from artistic representations of gestation to scientific drawings and sketches, providing a visual narrative of the evolving knowledge in embryology.
