The first edition. 'Cunynghame was a British Army man. He entered the South via the Misssissippi route and passed through St. Louis, Memphis, Napoleon, Natchez, New Orleans, Mobile, Stockton, Montgomery, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington and Richmond. He noted that the South had better food and wine than the North and that slavery, while mild, was a curse. He observed the scenery, wildlife, methods of transportation, country inns, and Irish labourers. The highlight of the book is the description of New Orleans, including details on hotels, churches, cemeteries, markets, gardens, dances, and sports.'- Clarke. pp. [vi],337,[1]. A choice copy in the publisher's brick-red cloth, blocked in gilt & blind, slighty faded to spine & part of upper board. Some light wear to spine ends and lower board corner a little bumped, but a fresh & clean copy. VG. [Howes C958; Clarke III, 458; Allibone Suppl. 431; Smith Bibliotheca Americana 794].
