New York: Delacorte Press, 1990. First Edition., FINE -/ VG+ CONDITION, ( very minor wear to dj at 2 corners, small prev/ owners initals on bottom of page block ), bound in original white linen-backed black boards, title in green on spine, hard bound in dust-jacket, 6x9, 292 pages. GET SHORTY follows the fortunes of Chili Palmer, a Miami loan shark with a talent for making a slow pay come across by saying just three words: "Look at me." Chili's pursuit of a mark who's behind in his payments takes him first to Las Vegas, and then to Hollywood and horror-film producer Harry Zimm. Harry has gambled away $200,000 earmarked for his next production in an attempt to raise enough money to interest superstar Michael Weir in a high-concept film Harry is certain will be a hit. But now his "investors" want to know where their money is, and one of them, Bo Catlett, will kill to protect his interests. Chili and Harry form an uneasy partnership as Chili finds himself evaluating screenplays, meeting with studio execs, and pitching a movie idea of his own. But there are distractions: Karen Flores, former horror-film screamer who knows more about Hollywood than Harry, and Ray Bones, a hot-tempered wiseguy who can't forget the time Chili creased his scalp with a bullet. Most distracting of all is super-dude Bo Catlett, who wants Chili removed from the scenario permanently.Leonard's depiction of Hollywood in GET SHORTY makes for one of his most menacing and colorful settings, surpassing his earlier renderings of such cities as Detroit, Miami, Atlantic City, and New Orleans. Add to this his infallible earfordialogueand his insight into the psychology of big- and small-time hustlers-plus the bonus of his own adventures in the screen trade -and you have a one-of-a-kind reading experience that Leonard fans will relish, but no one should miss. Acerca de

Sinopsis:

Chili Palmer, a Miami loanshark, and Harry Zimm, a film producer in debt, become reluctant partners as they become embroiled in the seductive but deadly Hollywood scene

Review:

Nobody writes openings like Elmore Leonard. Case in point: "When Chili first came to Miami Beach twelve years ago they were having one of their off-and-on cold winters: thirty-four degrees the day he met Tommy Carlo for lunch at Vesuvio's on South Collins and had his leather jacket ripped off." You need to know about this because you need to know why there's bad blood between Chili Palmer and Ray Bones, the guy who stole his coat and is now his boss--and has ordered him to collect $4,200 from a dead guy. Except the guy didn't die; he went to Las Vegas with $300,000. So Chili goes to Las Vegas, one thing leads to another, and pretty soon he's in Los Angeles, hanging out with a movie producer named Harry Zimm and learning what it takes to be a player in Hollywood.

Get Shorty is classic Elmore Leonard: While other people write "crime fiction," Leonard's come up with a masterful social comedy that happens to be about criminals (and other fast operators). He's a master of snappy dialogue and dizzying plot twists. The best parts of Get Shorty move along so briskly you almost forget there's somebody with a firm control over the story. And you'll be rooting for Chili to get the money, the girl, and the studio deal. --Ron Hogan
