Ejemplar firmado: Signed by Author(s)
The father of famed Confederate general John Buchanan Floyd was an influential Virginia politician and soldier; representative (1817-29) and governor (1830-34). Free-Franked Envelope, 1p, 9 3/4" X 8" (unfolded; central front panel portion measures 5" X 3¼"), n.p., n.y. Very good. Mildly age toned, with quite minor soiling. Large red portions of original wax seal (split in half horizontally when envelope was opened) still present and attractive. Bold, handsome "Free / J. Floyd" at upper right of front panel, with recipient ("Col. Bernard Peyton / City of / Richmond / Virginia") penned in his hand below. Peyton (1792-1854) was a Richmond merchant, friend of Thomas Jefferson, co-founder of the Virginia Military Institute, postmaster of Richmond (1838-44), an officer in the 20th infantry who served in the War of 1812 and in 1825 was named adjutant general of Virginia. Though note dated, this envelope dates from Floyd's colorful gubernatorial period (remembered for the Nat Turner slave rebellion), when he regularly carried on correspondence with Peyton concerning military matters.
