The first English edition, published at 3s 6d bound, the work being originally published in Latin in 1581. Busbecq, a Flemming, was ambasador of the Emperor Ferdinand I to the Porte from 1532 to 1562. His letters contain perceptive accounts of Turkish life and analyses of the Ottoman state. On his return to Western Europe, Busbecq brought with him several manuscripts, of which the celebrated Deioscorides Codex, now in Vienna, is an example. He also collected coins, and is credited with introducing the tulip to Western Europe. Duodecimo (17.5 x 10cm). pp. viii,420,[4]. With two leaves of publisher's adverts at the rear. A few minor & occasional marks to the text. An excellent copy bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands, probably as issued and noted by Arber, the boards decorated in blind, the free endpapers replaced to style, the hinges and small area of lower front board very neatly and unobtrusively repaired.
