It was a defense of the Parliamentary regime, by then controlled by Oliver Cromwell; and also defense of his own reputation against a royalist tract published under the name Salmasius in 1652, and other criticisms lodged against him. The work was one of the last time Milton discussed Cromwell s character. Pierre du Moulin s Salmasius was a strong attack on John Milton. Alexander Morus was attacked by Milton in his Defensio Secundam, in the mistaken belief that he was the author of the anonymous Royalist work containing a rabid attack on Milton. Morus replied with Fides Publica in 1654, published like Regii sanguinis by Adriaan Vlacq (also attacked by Milton) Regii sanguinis was written by Pierre Du Moulin.
