Haarlem, Tjeenk Willink, 1902. 4°., original publ. cloth, bold black cover title with a large coloured circular portrait at top, spine with title. 303pp. coloured frontispiece tipped-in, 7 other coloured plates after watercolours tipped-in on stiff leaves, captions printed on tissue-guards, featuring non-indonesian population group members, many black/white plates after watercoours of which 2 double page, featuring indonesian types and professionssceneries, volcanoes, temples; many black/white illustrations in text, large to very large head-and-tail pieces, marginal illustrations, after watercolours and drawings by author, title vignette, table of contents. Despite its title, suggesting a art voyage through the Dutch East Indies, this book deals mainly with life and customs of non-indonesian population groups, commonly called "Vreemde Oosterlingen", e.g. Chinese on Sumatra and in Singapore (2 chapters), Arabs, Indians, Klingalese, Singhalese and Malays on Sumatra and in Singapore. The last chapter investigates court-life at Java, e.g. ceremonies and extraordinary festivals and notes of visits to various Volcanoes: Papandajan, Tankuban Prahu, Krakatau, Diëng Mountain-range, Bromo, including a visit to Prambanan & Borobudur Temple complexes.Good to very good copy.
