Descripción:

Octavo. Original reddish-brown cloth, titles to spine and upper board in gilt and black, photographic image of a dog to upper board, patterned endpapers. Frontispiece and 15 plates, both photographic and engraved. Attractive gift inscription in pencil to front blank, and a short pencil note to the head of the contents list. Cloth a little rubbed and dulled with some minor spots and marks, light spotting to the edges of the text block, contents lightly toned at the edges. A very good copy. A charming reissue of this book on dogs, first published in 1874, in the original publisher's cloth featuring a photographic image of a terrier. The contents cover a variety of breeds, including sporting, working, and lap dogs, with general information on their management and a significant section on the identification and treatment of canine diseases. Author Henry Walsh (1810-1888, writing here under the pseudonym Stonehenge) was an authority on field sports. "In 1853, under the pseudonym of Stonehenge, Walsh brought out his book The greyhound, on the art of breeding, rearing, and training greyhounds for public running, their diseases and treatment (3rd edn, 1875), based on articles he had written in Bell's Life. Three years later, in 1856, appeared Manual of British Rural Sports, which covers the whole cycle of field sports, and, among other things, deals in a scientific manner with the breeding of horses. It was frequently reprinted, as were The Horse in the Stable and in the Field (1861) and A Manual of Domestic Economy Suited to Families Spending from £100 to £1000 a Year (1857). He wrote many other books, mostly on sports but a few of them on cookery. In 1856 he originated the Coursing Calendar, which he conducted through fifty half-yearly volumes. About 1856 he began to write for The Field, and at the end of 1857 accepted the editorship" (ODNB). N° de ref. de la librería
