The first English edition, translated by Mrs. Percy Sinnett. Two volumes, octavo (22.5 x 14.5cm). 'The narration of the author's personal examination of Indian life and about original antiquities, occupy almost the whole of these volumes. The plates are principally illustrative of such phases of the one, and remains of the other, as seemed most noteworthy. With two lithographed frontispieces, a folding map and 10 further plates in lithography, some in colours, 8 full-page wood-engraved plates & 4 engravings on the letterpress. An excellent copy in contemporary pink calf, the spines richly gilt with twin labels, the boards with double line gilt border, the endpapers marbled. With the gilt crest of the Oxford Local Examinations to front boards & engraved presentation plate to a James Oliver Frison dated 1862.
