Also discussed is Darwin's theory that men are animals, being descendants of apes. The new introduction (2003) by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins (born 1941), presents a retrospective on Darwin's theories presented within the following text. Dawkins argues that this book must be approached with the knowledge that it was originally published in 1871, and that there were certain Victorian concepts that, although uniformly held by scientists at the time, are distasteful today. This introduction is then followed by a preface to the second edition written by Darwin himself, who briefly mentions the changes he had made from the first edition. He also addressed a couple of the complaints of the book held by critics. Then follows the author's introduction, where Darwin describes his purpose in writing this book of applying his theory of natural selection to the phylogeny, or evolutionary lineage, of the human race. The book itself consists of Darwin utilizing a number of his own findings, combined with the studies of others, to piece together what evolutionary forces led to the creation of mankind. An entertaining and educational read, there are a variety of interesting stories and examples that Darwin includes in his writing that both entertain the reader, and feed their desire to learn more about the fundamentals of nature. A fresh new volume of a revolutionary work by the famous naturalist and scientist, Charles Darwin, who at the time of publishing had already made his mark in the scientific world by presenting his theory of natural selection and the tale of his famous voyage on the HMS Beagle. "The Descent of Man" was originally published as two separate volumes, one about the man's evolutionary lineage, and the other about selection in relation to sex. In later editions the two volumes are combined together. English **AUTHOR Charles Darwin himself was an incredibly influential yet controversial character in the world of science for his findings. Many religious figures shunned his ideas of evolution and natural selection as being blasphemous, while others accepted his findings as part of the miraculous workings of God. This book in particular sparked little controversy in comparison to Darwin's first introduction of natural selection, owed in part to the public's growing belief in his theories.
