Descripción:

Kigezi, a district in south-western Uganda, has proved itself to be an area of exceptionality in many ways. In contrast to many other parts of the colonial world this district did not adopt cash crops, successfully adopted soil c onservation practices, and had a remarkably developed and individualised land market. This book presents a comprehensive study of livelihoods in Kigezi. Its findings are particularly exciting for all those involved in the ong oing key debates in natural resource management and environmental history. Following the lead of groundbreaking studies by Tiffen, Fairhead and Leach, this case study pushes this debate forward, exploring how the political e conomy of land and labour has been transformed alongside a more positive environmental story. GRACE CARSWELL is a Lecturer in Geography at Sussex University Published in association with the British Institute in Eastern Africa North America: Ohio U Press; Uganda: Fountain Publishers. Descripción James Currey, United Kingdom, 2007. Hardback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: N/A. Brand New Book. Today s development agenda is ever more focused on results. This book raises questions about how results and outcomes are evaluated, and reflects on notions of success in colonial and contemporary development policy. The first part of the book examines colonial attempts in Kigezi, in south-western Uganda, to introduce cash crops, soil conservation practices, and tenure reforms. Throughout these chapters the dominant theme concerns the enduring character of smallholder farming conducted in the context of wider economic possibilities. The second part of the book explores broader changes in Kigezi, with two restudies of colonial research. Following the lead of groundbreaking studies by Tiffen, Fairhead and Leach, this case study illustrates that the usual assumptions about population pressure and environmental change need to be questioned. It pushes this debate forward, exploring how the political economy of land and labour has been transformed alongside a more positive environmental story. Nº de ref. de la librería AAH9781847016003
