This volume of essays on the fourteenth-century Libro de Buen Amor by Anglophone Hispanists comprises survey articles (author and milieu, print and manuscript traditions, metrics, exempla and proverbs, modern theoret ical treatments of the Libro ), fresh readings of a key passage (the encounter between Don Amor and the Archpriest, and don Melón and doña Endrina), and appraisals of the Libro's meanings and structure as pre-novelist ic discourse, and through chaos theory. Contributors are Alan Deyermond, Elizabeth Drayson, Martin Duffell, Jeremy Lawrance, Laurence de Looze, Dorothy S. Severin, Barry Taylor, and the editors. N° de ref. de la librería 821

Acerca de

Sinopsis:

Juan Ruiz's Libro de Buen Amor is one of the major literary accomplishments of the Iberian Middle Ages, and has generated an extensive secondary bibliography. Its uniqueness and diversity have thrilled and perplexed readers, and its influence is felt in modern letters. The current volume contains a series of essays that offer new scholarly insights into the Libro, in tribute to the late G. B. Gybbon-Monypenny and his 'Libro de buen amor' Studies, and in order to contextualize the Libro for a fresh generation of readers. The Preface addresses the critical legacy of the articles in Gybbon-Monypenny's Tamesis volume, and assesses trends in Libro scholarship. The articles offer surveys and new insights on the context and socio-political milieu of Juan Ruiz (Louise M. Haywood), the Libro's metrics (Martin J. Duffell), its use of traditional wisdom (Barry Taylor), and its transmission (Jeremy Lawrance), the central episodes of Don Amor and Doña Endrina (Alan Deyermond, Dorothy S. Severin), and the application to the Libro of modern critical approaches, drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin, folklore studies, chaos theory, and reader-reception theory (Elizabeth Drayson, Laurence de Looze, Louise O. Vasvári).
