[1850] American Sunday-School Union (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), 2 7/8 x 4 3/8 inches tall hardcover, marbled paper-covered boards over black cloth spine, gilt lettering to spine, copiously illustrated with 43 wood engravings, contains twelve separately paginated eight-page stories (each with its own title page and three or four engraved illustrations), [96] pp. As with most works from this press, no date, but the address (146 Chestnut St.) narrows the dates to 1827-1853. Slight to moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers. Moderate to heavy bumping to tips and fore edge of rear board. Slight foxing to blank endpapers. A number of pages with light to moderate foxing or staining. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean and unmarked - of this uncommon compilation of classic children's tracts. ~UUU~ [1.0P] A collection of 12 mid-19th century American children's morality tales by the American Sunday-School Union, a significant publisher and provider of books and periodicals for children which played an important role in shaping the direction of 19th century children's literature in America. Each tale has its own title page and is eight pages long, with three or four wood engraved illustrations in each. Despite being intended for a very young audience, these titles do not shirk difficult subjects, dealing with religion, alcoholism, money and even death - with illustrations (yes, there's a casket). A marvelous slice of mid-nineteenth century conservative Christian Americana. Contents: Human Life, The Converted Child, The Fearful Child, The Mother's Jewels, Going to Church, The Still and the Spring, The Shepherd, The Visit, The Lame Dove, The Parrot, Singing, The Worth of a Penny.
