Jowett begins his book with an overview of the different religious groups in the region, including Jews, Muslims, Ismailis, Ansaris, Druze, Yazidis and many Christian sects. He includes referent to earlier explorers, including Carsten Niebuhr and John Lewis Burckhardt. Jowett traveled from Alexandra to Beirut in May 1823.
