Descripción:

Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine gilt, edges uncut. With the dust jacket. Endpapers slightly tanned. Otherwise a fine copy in a price-clipped jacket with lightly toned extremities. First edition, in the first-issue binding, of the author's first published book, rarely encountered in such condition. The publisher Reginald Ashely Caton (1897-1971) was an elusive one-man publisher who founded The Fortune Press, based at 12 Buckingham Palace Road, in 1924. He pecialised in gay writing (several Fortune Press productions were burned after the 1934 obscenity trials), and in taking on new poets (whom he rarely paid - but could afford to publish due to judicious stockpiling of paper stock during the war years). He published Wallace Stevens, Dylan Thomas, and Philip Larkin, as well as Kingsley Amis, who delighted in the "Caton mystique" and wrote him into four of his novels as a thinly disguised rogue. Descripción 0, 1947. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Fair. First edition. Sent within 24 hours. Expedited UK delivery available. Edition: . Author's first book; presumed First edition, second state/issue. Publishers grey imitation boards, a little scuffing on upper with some grubbiness on shoulder and extremely little on edges. Printed on much heavier paper than the true first, and hence the impression is better. This copy is uncut/unopened at foredges and interior is near fine. This issue suffers from the same overgluing at the endpapers as the first, showing one tiny glue mark at title, but has not been pulled open as so many have. Nº de ref. de la librería BBI1649072

Descripción The Fortune Press, London [1964]., 1964. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 2nd Edition. The second, unauthorised edition of the author's uncommon first book. 32pp. Asparagus-coloured boards lettered in gold at spine. A tiny hint of wear to head of spine and upper board lifting just a fraction. Corner of front endpaper clipped, presumably to remove a former owner name. A lovely crisp copy, internally flawless bar the aforementioned clipping. Housed in thin paper dust wrapper with the 12'6 price sticker to front flap. Wrapper tanned at spine panel, a little chafed at rear flap joint, with some light sunning to some extremities and two areas of loss from spine panel. Thirty-one poems. "The renown of the author prompted Caton to produce this second edition, but his omission to inform [Amis] of the existence or to benefit him from its sales must be construed as being rather more than forgetful-ness" - Timothy d'Arch Smith, 'R.A. Caton and the Fortune Press'. Nº de ref. de la librería FP90021

Descripción London: The Fortune Press, [1947], 1947. Octavo. Rebound in near-contemporary red boards, titles to spine gilt, edges uncut. With the dust jacket. Slight smudge to p. 8, otherwise an excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket that has toned edges. First edition, first impression, later issue binding, of the author's first published book. The publisher R. A. Caton was an elusive one-man publisher who founded The Fortune Press, based at 12 Buckingham Palace Road, in 1924. He pecialised in gay writing (several Fortune Press productions were burned after the 1934 obscenity trials), and in taking on new poets (whom he rarely paid - but could afford to publish due to judicious stockpiling of paper stock during the war years). Descripción London; The Fortune Press, [1947]. First edition. 19,5x13,5 cm. Publisher's red boards with printed pale blue-green dustjacket. Both flaps are clipped and there is a 10/6 price sticker on the front one. The jacket is slightly sunned at spine and has a short tear at rear upper folding, a small speck and a light crease on front panel, and a minimal chip at top front corner. Pp. 17/18 has a small tear in outer margin, contents are otherwise fine and partly unopened. An extremely well-preserved copy of the author's first book. Amis, who neither received any payment for the publication of this book, nor for the unauthorised second edition of 1964, haunted the publisher in several novels to finally kill him off in The Anti-Death League. D'Arch Smith, R. A. Caton and the Fortune Press 10. Nº de ref. de la librería 21702

Descripción London: The Fortune Press, [1947], 1947. Octavo. Original black morocco-grain cloth, titles to spine gilt, edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Spine-ends lightly rubbed, cockling to pastedowns and endpapers as often. A very good copy in the tanned and chipped dust jacket separated along the front joint. First edition, first-issue binding. A significant presentation copy of the author's first published book, inscribed by him to "David Williams, sincere good wishes from Kingsley Amis, December 1947" on the front free endpaper, and again at a later date below, "Sounds a bit formal, would you say? Jolly good luck and raucous cheers (in slightly less tidy handwriting) from Kingsley, December 1978". David Williams was Amis's contemporary at St John's College, Oxford, and a member of his close-knit circle of college friends who informally called themselves "The Seven"; Philip Larkin was also a member, and in his biography of Larkin, Andrew Motion wrote that the group, however unserious, "anticipated the principles which were more coherently described by The Movement in the 1950s" (Motion, Philip Larkin: A Writer's Life, p. 69). Williams eventually graduated with a Third degree after his studies were interrupted by a period of service in the Royal Navy. He then became a successful advertising executive, but after suffering a stroke in 1976, turned to writing crime fiction and produced more than twenty "whodunnit" novels, most of which featured Oxford graduate and merchant banker Mark Treasure. He died 2003. Bright November is often encountered in rebound state. Nº de ref. de la librería 112769
