VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book. "A Bitter Debt" By Annie S. Swan (Mrs. Burnett-Smith). Undated Edition, believed to be circa 1893, published by Hutchinson & Co., London. 8vo, 22.3 cm x 15 cm x 4.8 cm, Red cloth-covered boards, Gilt embossed lettering & panel, and colour decoration on spine & front cover, All edges gilt, Tissue-guarded Frontispiece, no dust-jacket. 381 pages. Weight: 703 Grams. CONTENTS ARE LIKE NEW!!! However, there are several cracks between pages throughout. Spine is discoloured & scuffed, slightly marked, bumped & frayed either end with slight damage there, large split in cloth from tail up alongside front cover, 2 tiny bubbles in cloth at tail, gilt & decoration a bit dull & slightly worn away in places. Cover is very worn, foxed, discoloured in places, marked mostly on back, front board is bumped & broken at top edge, the split is about 2.5 cm long, some small holes in cloth, edges bumped & worn with splits in cloth there. Corners are bumped & frayed with boards exposed on all 4, boards worn away on bottom ones. Gilt on outer edge scuffed but quite bright still. Pastedowns & e.ps. slightly marked. Prize sticker dated 1905 on 1st e.p. Frontis. has frayed vertical & bottom edges. A few pages have tiny edge bumps/tears, and/or light smudges in margins. Light age tanning & rare foxing throughout.
