Published in 1970 by the author to mark the centennial of the official declaration of city status for Wellington, this history looks back to 1840 when the first European settlers arrived under the auspices of the New Zealand Land Company. Arthur Carman is a respecterd historian, particularly of the Wellington area, where his forebears were early settlers. He was a well known Wellington bookseller and also wrote on NZ sporting topics. His "The Birth of a City" is a well researched history, taking the Wellington story through the earliest days of settlement and the election of the first borough council in 1842. 180 pages including 10 appendices and index, fold-out colour art frontis, two colour art plates, three document plates, five b/w plates, eight small portraits, e/paper plans of Wellington 1941. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. DJ is VG, unclipped with colour city coat of arms to front, tiny perforation lower front adjacent spine.
