FIRST EDITION. Small 8 vo. Contemp. mottled lea., back richly gilt. (32), 268 pp. Title with large engraved vignette illustrating an electrical experiment with lighting + 8 folding engraved plates. Lower portion of front joint worn, plate IV with small piece torn away just touching image; a good to very good copy. The Augsburg silver turner, Jakob Langenbucher (d. 1791), is known to have spent a good deal of his wealth on improvements of electric devices. In 1780, he published the present work which describes and illustrates his rotating globe machine on the Nairne pattern. W.D. Hackmann in 'Electricity from glass' (1978, p. 199) notes Langenbucher's 1780 machine and relates it to a type designed and made by Kulibin, the director of the workshop of the Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. Many experiments are described in the text and attractively illustrated in the plates. Ronalds, p.285. Gartrell 302. Bakken, p.78. Wheatland, p.133. Not in Wheeler Gift, Mottelay, or Ekelöf.
