"Bees in Amber, a Little Book of thoughtful Verse" by John Oxenham, was a stupendously popular book. the copy here offered was published by Methuen & Company in London in 1944, being the 18th printing, and the 295th Thousand copy. More were printed later. With its end-papers - and more - of busy bees, an it charming but petite construction - this is a book unlike anything being published today . and it was one of the most popular books of its day. **************************************** John Oxenham is the pseudonym of William Arthur Dunkerley (1852 - 1941), who was an popular English journalist, novelist and poet. He was also a teacher and a Deacon of the Congregational Church. It was Oxenham who wrote the popular poem "Greatheart. Mr. Dunkerley was a very successful and popular author, having more than 70 titles published (most under Oxenham, but a few under his given name, and even some under another pseudonym, "Julian Ross") . He wrote a very early mystery ("Mystery of the Underground"), which happened to be one of the first to deal with a serial killer; it was set in the then quite new London Underground transit system. Oxenham also was co-founder of a literary periodical, "The Idler' for which author Jerome K. Jerome acted as one of the editors. *************************************** Mr. Dunkerley was also the father of two daughters, who, themselves had popular careers as writers. One of them, Elsie Jeanette Dunkerley (1880 1960), was the popular author of books for girls. Her output, which included the popular "Abbey" series, totaled at least 87 books.
