July 9, 1841"._____ Discusses the baptism of "Blackfeather, one of the chiefs who has for two or three months past._____indulged a hope in the Savior." . _____ There is also a 2 1/2 page report from The Sandwich Islands (Hawaii)._____ It is comprised of extracts from a letter from "Mr Bishop" in Oahu and from a letter of "Mr Smith" in Honolulu, both dated Dec. 7th, 1840._____ Both reflect on events since the French._____Naval Captain LaPlace took control of the Islands in July 1839. _____ ._____"Then there were not more than two or three grog-shops in all this village._____ Now there are between twenty and thirty." "The formerly quiet town of Honolulu became a scene of revelry and noise, and the resort of the vicious, never before surpassed." . _____ Natives ".not connected with the church, had begun to manufacture intoxicating drinks from various saccharine vegetables, which the island affords in great abundance." Mentions that the US Exploring Squadron under Commodore Charles Wilkes had just left after a stay of 70 days._____ They regret his departure noting that Wilkes had ".set his face as a flint against intemperance and the rash doings of captain La Place.". _____ There is lots of bitter talk about the introduction of Catholicism._____"Its priests are flocking in upon us from France, and are organizing a deadly opposition against us among the natives._____ By the most deceptive arts they are enticing to their embrace._____this simple people._____ Numbers who have long and perseveringly withstood the word of God and continued in impenitence, are now flaming papists.". _____ Mentions in passing that two native men are being readied to serve as missionary aides in the Rocky Mountains._____Are they in for a rude surprise!._____ ._____Concludes with a short report on the mission to the Cherokees in the Indian Territory/Oklahoma. by Rev Evan Jones, in the Cherokee Nation, June 26, 1841. _____ Some foreign missions include: Denmark, Siam, West Africa and Calcutta, India. _____ It is remarkable that the journal has survived in its original untrimmed wrappers, without being bound up. _____ There is spotting to both covers._____ The upper forecorner of the front cover has been torn off. _____.
