First Edition. THIRTEEN VOLUMES. Large 8vo. 8.75 x 5.25 inches. This set is one of the deluxe large paper issue which was printed on superior paper. Bound in full contemporary green morocco, gilt, the boards finely decorated in gilt panals with a central diamond made of small tools derived from decorative floral motifs, also decorated in blind, spines in compartments, decorated and lettered in gilt with inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Some slight scattered foxing to preliminary blanks and end-papers and occasionally in margins ot text, but plates in excellent condition. In common with many serial publications of the period, the binder has made errors in numbering the volumes and there is slight variation in style of decoration of last three volumes overall a fine set. Signatures of Preston Cobb on front pastedowns and inscription on second free endpaper, recording gift of the volumes by Emma Cobb, to her son, Preston in 1851. Illustrated by 12 engraved titles, and 336 highly finished hand coloured plates. Of which 288 have 4 plants per page and by The Fruitist which has 48 hand coloured plates. A nearly complete set of this periodical, originally published in monthly parts over twenty-six years,containing 288 flower plates, each with four superbly hand coloured images of plants (total 1152) by the author's two daughters and Mrs E. Bury, (Priscilla Susan Bury), a highly skilled botanical illustrator. The volumes also include the separate titles of Maunds's Auctarium, Floral Register with over 3000 small wood engravings in it's text. and The Fruitist, the latter with 48 hand coloured plates. A full set of this periodical would also have a final volume with another 24 flower plates and 24 plates of The Fruitist this is not present in this set. Benjamin Maund (1790-1864), was the son of a Worcestershire farmer of Tenbury and was apprenticed to a printer and bookseller in Ludlow, before taking over a similar business in Bromsgrove. He experimented with seeds and plants from around the world in his large garden. He became a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1827. A splendid collection of beautifully executed hand-coloured floral illustrations with helpful inscriptions that explain the origins of the Latin names of the plants and trace their history of cultivation and folklore attached to each.
