UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY. PAPERBACK. Large 8vo., pp. 13-140 plus index. Central Asian sketch map in the preliminary pages. Nearly 200 colour and b/w photographs by the author. Paper covers, sound/GOOD. Interior, FINE. Dust jacket in protective acetate, sound/VG. There is an enduring fascination about Central Asia and the steppes of Mongolia. Reading this book and looking at the splendid photographs taken by the author it is not difficult to understand why. Fitzroy Maclean inspired generations of Foreign Office recruits and travellers with his first book Eastern Approaches, which he followed with Disputed Barricade, A Person from England and Back to Bokhara. All dealt with an area of the world he found absorbing and in which he travelled extensively over many years. He says modestly that To The Back of Beyond is neither a serious work of scholarship nor even a serious travel book. If it were it would deal in more detail with the atrocious communist inspired architecture, which has sprawled and nearly destroyed what the centuries failed to do. However, it is an invaluable companion and guide to an enormous region becoming more and more accessible to visitors. N° de ref. de la librería 10329

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
