Descripción:

This Confederate general, nicknamed "Devil Forrest" and "The Wizard of the Saddle," was a formidable and innovartive cavalry commander and post-war an influential Southern loeader, controversial because of his Ku Klux Klan involvement. Secretarially-signed ANS, 1p, 8" X 10", Memphis, TN, 1874 June 3. Addressed to F.F. Stockwell. Very good. Mounting traces on corner versos (visible at upper corners on recto); faint original mailing folds (none weakened). On letterhead of "Selma, Marion & Memphis Rail Road Co." listing Forrest as president, he notes that "Mr. J.B. Morton is now residing in Nashville Tenn, & I presume any communication will reach him there." Boldly penned in a large, legible and flamboyant hand -- but not Forrest's, alas. Below the secretarial signature appears "[illegible] M. Genl" -- an odd error since Forrest's rank rose from Major General (attained 4 December 1863) to Lieutenant General on February 28, 1865. This railroad venture was on its last legs about this time, with the panic of 1873 still going strong, and it would soon go bankrupt, forcing Forrest to supervise a prison work farm on the Mississippi River to survive and living min a log cabin saved from his plantation. Accompanied by a handsome mid-20th century 8" X 10" glossy photograph, a reprint of a famous head-and-shoulders portrait of Forrest in his Confederate uniform. Very good. Remember, a secretarial letter from this sad period near the end of Forrest's life, but interesting nonetheless. N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción Campbell's note on letterhead of 33 Kensington Square London; in envelope postmarked 26 June The copy letter to Wallis from the Royal Hotel Southport 9 April 1899, 1899. Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE. Autograph note. 1p., 12mo. In envelope with stamp and postmark, addressed by Campbell to 'Lawrence W. Hodson Esq | Compton Hall. | near Wolverhampton'. The note reads: 'Dear Mr. Hodson. | I shall be very happy to see you on Thursday at 4 o'c. I consider it most kind of you to consider the matter at all. | Yours very truly | B S Campbell'. TWO. Secretarial letter or copy. 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In a neat close hand, with what purports to be the signature of 'Beatrice Stella Campbell', but is not. Whether a transcript or secretarial copy, the letter has Campbell exhorting Wallis to 'Please, please beg & implore your friend to look upon the matter as Sir Edward would have looked upon it. Sir Edward gave me the picture, it is mine, indeed it is, whoever has it.' She explains that she would prefer not to offer more for it than Hodson paid, 'because then I would feel that I had bargained for what was my own & it would take away the preciousness of Sir Edwards gift. | Tell Mr. Hodson I will do anything for him in return. I will sing for him! or dance for him! - or act for him, or pray for him, or sit 100 times to an artist for my picture to be painted for him!!! -' Word cannot convey 'what pain has been given through the selling of that picture' or her gratitude if Hodson would let her have it. 'The Knopff is another matter I'll bargain for that! or I should like to hear if there is any chance of my getting it.' She concludes by giving her London address, and enquiring if Hodson would see her there. Mrs Campbell had been romantically linked with Burne-Jones's son Philip. Hodson was a wealthy brewer, connoisseur of Pre-Raphaelite painting and patron of the Arts and Crafts movement. Nº de ref. de la librería 13773
