With full page illustrations and vignettes by H.M. Brock throughout. A fine set of the most celebrated work of this great American writer and reformer. A fully illustrated set of 'The Breakfast Series' by Oliver Wendell Holmes, in a uniform binding by Cornish Brothers Book Binders of Birmingham. Three volumes of Holmes's 'The Breakfast Series'. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was American poet, and physician. Though he was known as a poet it was the 'Breakfast Series' that gained him international fame. The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table originally started as a segment in The Atlantic Monthly, and was later collated into a book. Comprised of a series of essays, between the author and the residents of a boarding house, known only by their profession. This first book later became a three volume series. The three different speakers are, the Professor, the Autocrat and the Poet. The work is very much influenced by Holmes's own views on the topics of science, medicine and morality. Illustrated throughout by H M Brock, a British illustrator and landscape painter. He mostly illustrated for classic Victorian and Edwardian fiction. His work has also been exhibited regularly in the Royal Academy. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, 5 raised gilt bands separating 6 compartments which are all edged in gilt, spine colour has faded from green to brown, as is usual on all 3 volumes. Joints good condition sound. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition half dark green leather/green cloth boards separated by gilt lines. Page edges good condition top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges lightly tanned and foxed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition decorated with ribbon effect design around two edges and table place settings along the bottom edges, there are some initials printed in the top right hand corner of the rear paste down in all volumes, lightly tanned and foxed in all three volumes. End papers good condition ribbon effect decoration continues from the paste downs together with the table place settings along the bottom edges, there are some initials in the top right hand corner of the front and rear end papers in each volume, lightly tanned and foxed in all 3, previous owner s signature to one of the end papers in each volume. Title good condition blue and brown text, illustration with a table laid for tea, lightly tanned in all three volumes. Pages good condition previous owner s signature on one of the front free end papers in each volume, tissue guarded frontispieces in each volume, numerous illustrations and vignettes by H Brock throughout each volume, these are listed at the front of each book.
