VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "The Australian Encyclopaedia - Volume I" Edited by Arthur Wilberforce Jose & Herbert James Carter, with the collaboration of T. G. Tucker. From the Australian Encyclopaedia series, this is the Third Edition, Revised, published by Angus & Robertson Limited, Australia, 1927. Large & heavy book. PLEASE NOTE: As this book is heavy (over 2 Kg with packaging), if you are buying this from outside the U.K. please expect additional shipping costs. 4to, 27.5 cm x 19.5 cm x 5 cm, Green cloth-covered boards, Gilt embossed lettering & floral motif decoration on spine, Clear embossed framing & motif on front cover, Orange end papers, Some pages have rough-cut edge, no dust-jacket. 772 pages. Weight: 1.906 Kg. (1906 Grams). CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY LIKE NEW!!! However, there are 2 cracks exposing hinges: one between 1st title page & Frontispiece, the other between last page & end paper. There are also 3 or 4 cracks froming between pages throughout the book. Spine is discoloured but clean, scuffed alongside cover both sides, bumped , scuffed & frayed either end with small splits in cloth there, gilt quite bright but slightly worn away in places. Cover is discoloured in parts but mostly clean, tiny hole in cloth on front near spine head, edges scuffed, worn & bumped. Corners are bumped & frayed, boards exposed there. Ink annotation on front end paper. First title page is slightly rippled. Small area of surface damage to paper on illustration plate V where some glue on one page has stuck to the adjacent page. Small mark in bottom margin of pages 47 to 66 inc. Illust. plate VI is slightly marked. Tiny textured mark in margin of p. 114 and p. 115. Illust. plate XI slightly marked on reverse. Tiny ink spot over text on p. 445 & 446, text still legible. Darker age tanning 'shadow' on pages 482 & 483 where newspaper clipping was once inserted in book. Some pages (very few) have corner folds, and/or faint marks/smudges in margins, and/or tiny edge bumps, and/or creasing alonside spine, and/or light handling creases. End papers slightly marked at either end of book. Very light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout. RARE ITEM, LOVELY INSIDE!!! A comprehensive reference book on Australia, including its Flora & Fauna, scientific articles and breakthroughs most recent at the time, historical and biographical documents, and much more information besides. Richly illustrated with full page colour and black & white plates including photographs, and other monochrome illustrations amongst text such as drawings, maps, diagrams and graphs.
